Jewellery Designer-Work in Progress- Our New Collection from Sketchbook to Workbench
A peak into the sketchbook of jewellery designer Alison Macleod.
Normally keeping up with orders affords me little time to explore new ideas, but lockdown gave me the space to work on my sketchbook, where I've been drawing from nature to design a group of pieces expanding on my Catkin collection.
A series of new shapes have emerged from my development drawings which have gone on to form the basis of my new designs. Each of these designs focuses on the shape itself and the organic pattern on its surface with little other embellishment. Celebrating Fairtrade gold and its beautiful lustrous qualities.
With my drawings complete, I continue to design at the workbench, many decisions happen throughout the making process. I have found myself working on the whole collection at once, letting unresolved pieces sit within eyesight, giving me time for resolutions to filter through naturally.
I have been trying pieces on before I go home at night to test their wearability, then making tweaks the next morning. Conversations with creative friends have been so valuable to work through ideas. Sometimes I find that just verbalising a problem helps.
My plan is to debut the collection at October's Spring Fling open studios alongside an online launch. I’m excited to realise each individual piece and see how they work together as a group.
